Can't Win for Losing

The little girl wanted to be a mommy
more than anything else in the world.
So she became a wife first
cause that's more acceptable.
The little girl became a mommy
and often forgot about being a wife.
She had 2 children,
and found herself a single mother.
One child died,
and she became afraid
to love the other one for fear of losing him too.

The wounded little girl
became more than a mother.
She became an employee,
a date, a secretary, a bitch, a divorcee.
None of the labels fit her quite right
for she was meant to be a mother,
with a baby in her arms at all times.
Instead, her fear and all her other roles
cheated her out of all her roles.

The wounded woman
often remembers the little girl she used to be -
the little girl who used to look
at baby things in the catalogs.
She wonders why,
now that she knows children are not forever -
why all she wants
is still to be the mother
of endless children.

She really ought to grow up.
